For years the stretch of 12th Street near Hamilton Avenue, beneath the elevated Gowanus Expressway and beside the canal, was home to a Pathmark supermarket set back behind a broad parking lot. When Pathmark's parent company, A&P, went bankrupt in 2015, the store's lease was put up for auction.
In late 2015 Joyland Group and its joint-venture partner won the A&P bankruptcy auction for Pathmark's lease at the site. Building on that lease, Joyland eventually purchased the site itself in October 2016: about 4.6 acres, with the store building and its parking lot. Joyland later sold the site in May 2018.
